Dr. Jack Gallagher (Vance) is a radical unorthodox psychiatrist who becomes Director of Mental Health Services at Wharton Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles. Gallagher is able to delve into the minds of his patients with an uncanny ability to understand them and see their reality as they see it. This allows him to uncover what might be the key to their long-term recovery. Using this ability, Gallagher performs unorthodox treatments on his patients, which causes serious conflicts with his boss, Nora (Sciorra), with whom he has a romantic past, and frequent anger outbursts from his co-workers. Jack not only has to deal with his patients, but with Veronica (McKenzie), an ambitious psychiatrist, his rival at the hospital, and Carl (Webster), an attending physician with a pristine image but hiding a deep hatred for Gallagher. In addition, there is Arturo (Gonzalez), a junior resident addicted to women, and Chloë (Ramirez), a young and sexy doctor who shuns Arturo's overt sexual advances towards her.
