早乙女乱马是一名修习武学的日本少年，来到中国青海咒泉乡（虚构的地点）修行，不慎落入「娘溺泉」（女溺泉），因而遇到冷水就会变成女孩，遇到热水又会恢复成男孩。而他的父亲，朋友等也因为曾经掉到不同的泉水里会变身为熊猫、小黑豬、猫、鴨子等等。这种变身的本领给他们造成了不少麻烦，搞出不少笑料。故事在欢笑中表现了男主角为了达到更高的武术水准以及去除变身的困扰而进行的种种奋斗，也表现了少男少女间表面互相争斗，实则含蓄的纯真感情。是一部格斗爱情喜剧漫画
