It's 1941. Robert E. Lee Prewitt has requested Army transfer and has ended up at Schofield in Hawaii. His new captain, Dana Holmes, has heard of his boxing prowess and is keen to get him to represent the company. However, 'Prew' is adamant that he doesn't box anymore, so Captain Holmes gets his subordinates to make his life a living hell. Meanwhile Sergeant Warden starts seeing the captain's wife, who has a history of seeking external relief from a troubled marriage. Prew's friend Maggio has a few altercations with the sadistic stockade Sergeant 'Fatso' Judson, and Prew begins falling in love with social club employee Lorene. 太平洋战争前夕，拳击手布尔调到了夏威夷军营。拳击迷连长荷姆斯命令他加入连上的拳击队，然而布尔过去曾失手致使好友失明，因此无法解开心结，不愿再登拳击台。对上的士官们为了讨好荷姆斯处处为难布尔，只有沃登上士态度友好。极力开导布尔加入拳击队，然而固执的布尔仍执意不肯。班长马吉奥是布尔在这里的唯一朋友，他想尽办法帮助布尔，但却始终不能改变现况，马吉奥因为值勤时喝醉而被判刑送进了专门关押违纪军人的监狱，这里的士官裘森公报私仇向马吉奥进行报复，身受重伤的马吉奥侥幸逃出监狱，见到布尔时已经奄奄一息。布尔无法抑制内心的愤怒，杀死裘森位好友报了仇，此时，上级认为命令荷姆斯连长自动提出辞呈，然而布尔却在回营的途中误中同胞子弹以外身亡。
