Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs's 1914 novel, this film marked the beginning of the famous Tarzan series starring Olympic swimming champion Johnny Weismuller, who would go on to play the Ape Man in 11 subsequent films and remains the physical embodiment of the famous hero to this day. While the depiction of the King of the Jungle as an ignorant savage differs somewhat from the intelligent hero of the novels by Burroughs, Weismuller's Tarzan is visually gripping, performing his own stunts as he wrestles and defeats wild beasts in hand-to-claw combat. Maureen O'Sullivan's Jane Parker will prove as irresistible to the civilized modern viewer as she is to the untamed psyche of Tarzan. Featuring some 1930s footage from the jungles of Africa, this tale of the origin and early life of the Ape Man is a classic.
