Tiger and the Flame was one of the few India-produced films to enjoy distribution in the US (courtesy of United Artists). Producer-director Shrab M. Modi also plays the sizeable role of Rajguru, the advisor to 19th century Indian queen Rani Lakshmibai (Mehtab). Upon her arranged marriage to the much-older Raja (Mubarak), the queen takes a crash course in diplomacy, military strategy, self-defense. She applies the lessons learned by spearheading a revolt against the monopolistic East Indian tea company--and, ultimately, the British Empire itself.

章西女皇，印度民族大起义领导人之一，原名拉克希米·巴伊1842年嫁给章西王，成为王后。1853年丈夫去世后，以养子监护人身分登基。1854年，英国殖民当局以“绝嗣丧权”为由兼并章西王国，女皇领导人民发动起义。她身先士卒，浴血奋战，身负重伤仍坚持指挥战斗，直至阵亡。
