It is 1945 and the war has come to an end. The Yame family, a family of seven, are living in a six-tatami mat room at the home of a family friend in Hakata. Masako (Shibasaki Kou), 17, the eldest daughter, has been supporting the family in place of their useless father, Tokijiro (Nishida Toshiyuki).
